A wall is only as good as what's under it. Every wall we build starts with the base preparation its type calls for: excavated to the right depth, with a compacted base sized to the wall and the load behind it. That's what keeps walls from leaning, shifting or cracking years down the road.

Walls over 4 feet
Retaining walls over 4 feet tall require engineering and permits. We build retaining walls up to 4 feet, which covers most residential terracing, raised beds and seat walls. If your project needs a taller engineered wall, we'll tell you up front at the consultation.
The shortcuts we don't take
- No base preparation. Setting block directly on native soil is fast, but the wall settles unevenly and starts to lean or crack. We build on a compacted base.
- Not enough depth. A wall with no footing or a first course sitting on the surface has nothing holding it in place. We excavate to the depth the wall requires.
- Ignoring the water behind the wall. Water that builds up behind a retaining wall pushes on it with every storm. We install a drain behind our retaining walls so water has somewhere to go besides through the wall.

What affects the cost
Retaining walls are quoted after a site visit. The main factors are the wall type and finish, height and length, straight versus curved walls, the prep work the site needs (excavation, grading and hauling off soil), and access to the yard.
