Pondless Waterfalls and Water Features in Gilbert and the East Valley

Guests hear it before they see it: water spilling over stone as they walk up to the front courtyard. Out back, birds land along the stream every morning while you're on the patio, and the kids are out racing leaves down the stream and splashing their hands in the falls. A pondless waterfall gives you all of that, with no open water to worry about.
A pondless waterfall is a stream and waterfall with no pond at the bottom. The water drops into a hidden underground basin, gets pumped back to the top, and runs again. You get the sound and movement of moving water with less upkeep than a pond, and no standing water for kids or pets to fall into. Water features are Fernweh Outdoor's signature work, and every one we build is designed to look like it was always part of the landscape.
Where a pondless waterfall fits
- Courtyards and entries. The sound of water greets guests before they reach the front door.
- Estate properties. A long, meandering stream with multiple falls becomes the statement piece of the whole landscape.
- Backyard bird watching. Moving water brings birds in, and you get a front-row seat from the patio.
- Family yards. With no open water to fall into, it's a feature kids can enjoy up close, playing in the stream and watching the falls.
What's hidden underground
- Aquascape AquaBlox water storage. A modular underground basin holds the water for the whole system, out of sight under the stone.
- Pump vault. The pump and equipment sit in their own underground vault, hidden from view.
- A basin sized by formula, not by guess. We calculate how much water your stream and plumbing hold, then build the basin to hold all of it plus extra for natural evaporation. You can turn the feature off without it overflowing into your yard, and it won't run low in the summer heat.
- A spillway at the top of the falls. sets how the water enters the stream. For a self-sustaining ecosystem with lower maintenance, we can build it with an Aquascape BioFalls instead.
- Underlayment and EPDM liner. installed the same way as our ponds.

Designed to look like it was always there
We build meandering streams, not straight runs, with waterfalls facing different viewing points around your yard. We vary the falls too: sheet falls, horsetail falls, small drops and taller drops, so the feature sounds and looks different from every spot you see it. Everything is set with large boulders on excavated shelves, the way stone sits in nature.
How we build a pondless waterfall
- Layout from your approved 3D design.
- Excavation for the basin and stream, with shelves cut in to hold the boulders securely.
- AquaBlox basin and pump vault set in place.
- Underlayment and liner.
- Boulders and river stone set to build the stream and falls.
- Spillway or BioFalls, plumbing and pump installed.
- Options such as lighting, bubbling boulders or a fountain feature.
- Fill, test and tune the falls until the flow and sound are right.
The shortcuts we don't take
- Undersized basins. A basin that's too small overflows into the yard when the feature is turned off and runs low in the summer. Ours are sized by calculation.
- Small stones that shift. Small rock moves over time and looks piled, not natural. We use large boulders set on shelves.
- Shallow streams. A stream with no depth looks like a ditch with water in it. Ours are shaped to look like real water cut through them.
- “Staircase” waterfalls. Three even drops and done. We build variation: different fall styles, heights and directions.
- Spillways too wide for the flow. When the spillway is wider than the pump can fill, the waterfall looks like a trickle. We match the spillway to the pump so the falls look full.

We also build bubbling boulders and fountain features, either on their own or added to a larger water feature. These are designed and quoted individually.
Our warranty
Every pondless waterfall we build carries a 3-year workmanship warranty covering leaks and liner installation. Pumps and equipment are covered by Aquascape's manufacturer warranties. The workmanship warranty doesn't cover damage from wildlife, pets or tree roots, or changes made after installation.

What affects the cost
Our pondless waterfall packages are the easiest place to start, from a small waterfall for a patio or courtyard to a 16-foot centerpiece stream, each with a set size, equipment list and price. If your yard or your ideas don’t fit a package, we build custom features in any size and layout. Every project is finalized after a site visit. The main factors are stream length and elevation, boulder and river stone tonnage, pump size, the options you add, and access to the yard.
